Richard Lim is a Ph.D student in American Studies at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. His research explores why the interactions between Asian Americans and Latinx communities, especially their attempts to address hate violence through the discourse of equal rights, may have harnessed support for policing. Equally important, his project also investigates why inter-racial activists’ efforts to secure political representation and social membership may unintentionally contradict prior commitments to end policing and instead, foreclose possibilities for future coalition building. Prior to joining the University of Minnesota’s American Studies’ doctoral program, he has collaborated as a researcher at Stop AAPI Hate and the newly formed Asian American Research Initiative at San Francisco State University, where he has co-authored articles published in the Asian American Policy Review and Ethnic Studies Review. He received his M.A in Asian American Studies from San Francisco State University and a B.A in History and a minor in Asian American and Asian Diaspora Studies from the University of California, Berkeley.
