The Department of Art History is pleased to invite applications for its PhD program for Fall 2022. We accept applications from prospective students with either a bachelor’s (in any major) or master’s degree (in art history or a related discipline). All admitted students are supported with at least five years of funding (tuition, stipend, health insurance) and generous departmental support for research and conference travel.

Our department nurtures creative, interdisciplinary thinkers who can thrive in rigorous coursework across the University of Minnesota’s campus. We have especially strong curricular relationships with the departments of: American Indian Studies; American Studies; Anthropology; Chicano & Latino Studies; Cultural Studies & Comparative Literature; Gender, Women & Sexuality Studies; History; Religious Studies; and Theater Arts & Dance. We partner with local museums such as the Weisman Art Museum, the Minneapolis Institute of Art, and the Walker Art Center to offer opportunities for curatorial training. Methodologically, the department emphasizes student-led inquiry, including the development of an appropriate set of research theories and methods to support individual research agendas. Faculty advisors work closely with graduate students to develop their individual strengths and curiosities, with the goal to produce researchers and writers who are capable of responding to the pressing issues of their field, the discipline, and the larger academic and social world. Minnesota’s Art History faculty are leaders in their respective fields. Together, they represent specializations in:

  • Early Modern Europe, Asia & the Middle East
  • East Asian Art
  • European Art and Visual/Material Culture
  • Film, Photography, & Media Studies
  • Global Modern & Contemporary Art (1945 to the present)
  • Islamic Art
  • South Asian Art
  • U.S. Art and Visual/Material Culture

Minnesota’s PhD alumni go on to important careers in the academy, museums, and the wider world. Recent placements of the past ten-fifteen years have taken our graduates into careers at: Ambedkar University Delhi; Boston Athenaeum; DePauw University; Earlham College; Gustavus Adolphus College; Joslyn Museum; Milwaukee Art Museum; Minneapolis College of Art & Design; Minneapolis Institute of Art; Osseo Public Schools (Minnesota); Savannah College of Art & Design (Atlanta); Summer of the Arts (Iowa City); University of California-Berkeley; and University of Washington (Seattle). Our graduate students come from all of the United States and from abroad, with degrees from a range of institutions.
