What is your hometown?

Isabella and two other women standing in front of London Eye.

New Hope, MN.

Why did you choose to major in political science?

I chose political science because I believe it will give me great foundational work as I go to law school post-undergrad! I love reading and history, and have been fascinated by the law and judicial system, so I knew political science would be able to develop all these interests and skills.

What has been your favorite political science course at UMN?

My favorite course would have to be POL 4502W: The Supreme Court, Civil Liberties, and Civil Rights taught by Professor Tim Johnson. We practiced writing Supreme Court case briefs and discussed past Supreme Court cases. However, being a part of the political science internship program, POL 3080, this semester has been a blast! I am a family law intern with Tubman, and have had the opportunity to work alongside the legal coordination team by screening clients and performing data intake. It is exciting to present a case to the staff attorney team, as well, and talk about the different legal avenues clients can take within Tubman.

How are you involved on campus?

I am very involved on campus and love having the opportunity to meet so many different people! I am the treasurer for the Undergraduate Political Science Association (UPSA), and also the treasurer for the women’s club soccer team. I also manage the social media for our undergraduate philosophy journal, Epistemai. I am a student group representative in Student Government, as well as a member of Women in Economics. Lastly, I am a Direct Service Advocate for the Aurora Center, which has created some of my most fulfilling work on campus. I was an undergraduate TA for three semesters prior to my internship starting this semester.

What is your favorite part of the political science department?

I absolutely love the staff and the classes that are offered. I have been able to explore so many different pathways political science has to offer, from international law to government affairs. The courses offered vary and can apply to any interest in political science you have.

What do you hope to do after graduation?

I plan on volunteering for two years with PeaceCorps before attending law school!

What advice would you give to prospective political science students?

Even though some classes are very difficult and require a lot of reading, it is important to stay on top of your time management skills. On top of this, it is super important to create great relationships with your professors and never be scared to ask questions!
