SPPT Grad Student Leiry Warren Selected as CARLA Fellow for 2023-24

CARLA is pleased to announce the selection of Leiry Warren as the CARLA Fellow for the 2023–2024 academic year. She is a doctoral student whose interest in foreign language learning and teaching help support CARLA's mission to "study multilingualism and multiculturalism, to develop knowledge of second language acquisition, and to advance the quality of second language teaching, learning, and assessment."

Leiry Warren is a PhD student in Hispanic Linguistics in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese Studies. Her research interests include second language acquisition, oral fluency in assessments, sociocultural theory, metacognition in language learning, the use of scenarios (Di Pietro, 1994), and language policy. She earned a degree in Basic Education with emphasis in Humanities and Languages (Spanish, English, and French) from the Universidad Libre, Bogota, Colombia, graduating with honors. She later pursued an MA in Spanish as a Foreign Language Teaching at the Universidad de Navarra in Pamplona, Spain, where she was the recipient of the university's Excellence Scholarship. She obtained another MA in Hispanic Linguistics from the University of Minnesota where she currently teaches undergraduate Spanish courses. Her involvement with CARLA includes two presentations in the Teaching Roundtable: Ideas Inspired by the CARLA Summer Institutes in 2023 and 2022. These presentations were based on two CARLA Summer Institute Scholarship awards that enabled Leiry to enroll in the courses Foreign Language Literacies: Using Target Language Texts to Improve Communication, and Language & Culture in Sync: Teaching Linguistic Politeness and Intercultural Awareness.
