CGES Welcomes New Director & Program Coordinator

As of August 2024, The Center for German and European Studies is now under the direction of Matthias Rothe, associate professor of German and philosophy in the Department of German, Nordic, Slavic & Dutch. Matthias looks forward to working with colleagues from across the College of Liberal Arts to continue the center’s humanities legacy while expanding programming on contemporary German and European culture and politics.

Anna Dolezal also joins the center as the program coordinator. Before arriving at the University of Minnesota, Anna spent four years designing and coordinating programs for Notre Dame's Nanovic Institute for European Studies where she oversaw academic affairs and served as the faculty advisor for the Institute's Model European Union program. With a master's in international and European politics from the University of Edinburgh, Anna brings a deep understanding of contemporary European affairs to the center coupled with a passion for facilitating transatlantic dialogues for students, faculty, and the broader public.

CGES faculty, friends, and alumni are encouraged to stop by the Center (307 Social Sciences Building) and say hello. Anna & Matthias will have open office hours Thursday’s from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
