The Department of Chicano & Latino Studies and the Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum proudly present a Critical Conversations Series event: "Masks and Secrets (Mascaras y Secretos)" by Xavier Tavera.

Masks and Secrets (Mascaras y Secretos) is a photography project consisting of documenting Latina/o/x masks in the United States from two different sources: institutions and communities around the country.
The project has an emphasis on exploring the importance cultural narratives of masks and masking properties as resources within the active community that consists in documenting Latina/o/x masks in the United States.
There are two main sources for this project: masks archived in institutions around the nation; and the ones used daily in Latina/o/x communities. The existence and use of masks veil and unveil critical aspects of culture and identity.

The event is on Thursday, May 9, 2019, in the William Shepherd Room of the Weisman Art Museum from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM.
