The film Profe

In Minnesota, the Latine community burgeons amidst a vast opportunity gap. Two charter schools, Academia Cesar Chavez and El Colegio High School rooted in decades of struggle, champion equity through decolonized, bilingual education. The film PROFE delves into this educational revolution, blending history and contemporary narratives to illuminate its impact.

While the film centers these two specifc schools, it is also about the fundamental questions asked and debated regarding Chicano and Latino Studies specifically and Ethnic Studies overall:  What is taught to our children?  Who is to teach it?  How will it be taught?   To whom are educators, and those who work in schools, accountable?

We are asking audience members to view the film ahead of time, if possible, as we will only show a few specific clips and discuss those clips, rather than show the film in its entirety.  This will allow for a deeper discussion a few issues and dynamics expressed in the film.  Anyone not able to view the film ahead of time, is of course, completely welcome and will be able to be an active participant.

Here is the link to the film Profe, so that you can view it ahead of time.

After the discussion, we will divide into groups for those interested in being more informed and/or involved in furthering the work of ethnic studies via the MN Ethnic Studies Coalition or here on campus.

This event is presented by the Department of Chicano and Latino Studies and co-hosted by MALCS UMN, the College of Education and Human Development, and UNIDOS MN.
