Newberry Library exterior of the building

We are pleased to serve as the representative at the University of Minnesota for the Newberry Center for Renaissance Studies Consortium. The consortium provides funds to faculty and students at member institutions who want to visit the library for events and research. Though constituted around the Newberry Library located in Chicago, the consortium is also linked with the Folger Shakespeare Library located in Washington, DC, and can support travel for research and events at this institution as well.

For routine travel to attend Newberry or Folger events or to conduct research, Newberry Consortium Travel Grants of up to $300 are available to pay for travel and lodging. (We cannot reimburse meals or incidental expenses.)

Application Process

Faculty or graduate students interested in obtaining a travel grant should contact the Center for Premodern Studies by email and provide the following information:

  • Your name
  • Your department affiliation
  • Your status (MA, PhD, PhD candidate, faculty)
  • Reasons for your proposed visit to the Newberry or Folger Library.

We will let you know within two weeks whether your grant has been approved.

Reimbursement Process

If you have already attended an event and been approved for a grant, please fill out the reimbursement form, have us sign it, and then submit it with the original travel and lodging receipts to the Newberry, either by email or physical mail:

The Newberry Center for Renaissance Studies

60 West Walton Street

Your reimbursement will be paid directly to you by the Newberry Library Consortium.
