"Tweeting Out Loud: Prosodic orthography on social media"

Maria Heath successfully defended her dissertation, "Tweeting Out Loud: Prosodic orthography on social media"! With hundreds of tweets and millions of lines of acoustic data from Twitter, this dissertation focused on specific nonstandard uses of English orthography which seem to cue prosodic interpretations for readers, including capitalization, punctuation, and letter repetition. Using a novel production study methodology, this dissertation shed light on how orthographic conventions replace the missing linguistic cues in computer mediated communication. Maria's dissertation committee members were Professors Claire Halpert, Brian Reese, Diti Bhadra, Benjamin Munson, and Timothy Face. Many congratulations, Dr. Heath!
