About the presenters:

Rebekah Nagler is the Beverly and Richard Fink Professor in Liberal Arts and an associate professor in the Hubbard School of Journalism & Mass Communication at the University of Minnesota. She is also affiliate faculty at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health and a member of the Masonic Cancer Center. Professor Nagler's research examines the effects of routine exposure to health information in the media, with a particular focus on conflicting and often controversial health information. She has additional research interests in communication and health equity and am a member of the Collaborative on Media & Messaging for Health and Social Policy. Her work has been funded by agencies and organizations including the National Cancer Institute, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and American Cancer Society. From 2014-2017, she was supported by a career development award through the University of Minnesota's NIH-funded Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women's Health (BIRCWH) program. Professor Nagler received her PhD in Communication and her BA in the History and Sociology of Science, both from the University of Pennsylvania.

Elizabeth Wrigley-Field is an Assistant Professor at the University of Minnesota in the Department of Sociology and the Minnesota Population Center. She specializes in racial inequality in mortality and historical infectious disease and co-leads (with J.P. Leider) an ongoing project on COVID-19 mortality in Minnesota. She is also a quantitative methodologist, developing models designed to clarify relationships between micro and macro perspectives on demographic relationships. Professor Wrigley-Field received her PhD in Sociology from University of Wisconsin-Madison and her MA in Philosophy and BA in Sociology from New York University.

Can We Talk? is a new event series that gives students and faculty a chance to discuss today’s issues in an informal, casual setting. Led by CLA professors, these conversations will invite participants to share knowledge, ideas, and perspectives on topics that often divide us.
The format
CLA professors will kick-off conversations by sharing differing perspectives on specific topics. Then they'll invite students to join the discussion. You'll have a chance to ask questions, offer counter points, and dig deeper to understand each other's points of view.
