Nathan Buckley is a PhD candidate whose research explores the impact of the United Kingdom's exit from the European Union (Brexit) upon the lives of people living in Gibraltar, a British Overseas Territory. His dissertation, "Converging Borders and Contested Sovereignties: A Conjunctural Ethnography of Post-Brexit Gibraltar" (working title) takes Brexit as a conjunctural event whereby the coalescence of multiple competing political, social, economic, and ideological forces demonstrate emerging narratives and practices with implications for the state and (supra)national identity, as well as understandings of sovereignty and citizenship. Nathan's ethnographic study of Brexit from the vantage point of Gibraltar offers insight into everyday digital civic engagement with borders and geopolitics, the implication of British citizens in subversive border-crossing practices, and the articulation of Gibraltarian nationalism. His wider research interests extend to the study of European identity and the processes and projects of European integration.

On the way to completing his PhD, Nathan obtained an MA in Sociocultural Anthropology from the University of Minnesota. Nathan also holds a BA (Hons) in French and Hispanic Studies from the University of Sheffield, as well as an MSc in International Relations from University College London's Institute of the Americas where his research explored the politics of Pan-Caribbean LGBTQ+ activism and livelihoods, with a particular focus on Belize.

Prior to commencing his PhD, Nathan worked within the UK's higher education sector for several years in teaching and learning administration.
