Dingru Huang’s research and teaching engage with literary modernism, wartime cultural production, posthumanism, and environmental humanities in China and Global East Asia, with particular attention to the roles played by nonhuman animals. Her scholarly work has appeared in ISLE: Interdisciplinary Studies in Literature and Environment, Modern Chinese Literature and Culture, Comparative Literature in China, Chung-wai Literary Quarterly, and Ex-position.

Currently, Huang is working on her first book manuscript Between Animal and Machine: Ecologizing Modernisms in Wartime China, which explores how wartime cultural creators reposition the human condition in relation to nonhuman actors via literature, film, cartoon, and popular science writing. It interrogates the promises and perils of ecological connection in a time of division and destruction.

Aside from academic research, Huang enjoys writing short stories involving humans and other animals. Her stories can be found in Shanghai Literature and UNITAS.
