Hunter McLeod is a PhD student in the Asian and Middle Eastern Studies department at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. His research examines the intersections between area studies (specifically Japan studies) and the environmental humanities and how these fields allow for alternative modes of thinking, experiencing, and creating in the Anthropocene. His current project, tentatively titled Floating Oil and Drifting Jellyfish: Archipelagic Worlding in Contemporary Japanese Literature and Media, traces the representation and aesthetics of islands and archipelagos in postwar and contemporary Japan across a range of media including literature, film, video games, periodicals, government policy, and intellectual discourse. He has also written about theories of temporality in relation to the Anthropocene, specifically in Japanese manga.
