T. Mychael Rambo
T. Mychael Rambo is well known as an actor and vocalist receiving high marks for his contributions as a residency artist/educator and affiliate professor/recruitment coordinator at the University of Minnesota in the School of Theatre Arts and Dance, a motivational speaker, community organizer and a committed community volunteer. This year I received from my peers at the University of Minnesota the 2006 Century Council Community Award recognizing affiliate faculty for their effort to engage and illuminate community through artistic collaboration. Also in 2006, joined by my colleague, teaching partner and friend Anita Ruth, we received the 2006 Young Audience Artist of the Year Award.
My other honors and accomplishments include the 2001 Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Fellowship, 1999 McKnight Artist Fellowship for Theatre Artists, the 1998 Minnesota State Arts Board Career Opportunity Grant, 1997 Bush Fellowship Finalist in Scriptwork, and the 1997 Jerome Travel Grant which afforded me the opportunity to visit and research my family's homeplace of Rambo, Texas - one of the first "Freedman Towns" in East Texas. Also in 1997, I was invited to join a five-member U.S delegation to present at the 1997 International Augusto Boal Conference on Theatre for Social Change in Toronto, Canada. I received the 1996 Leadership Initiative in Neighborhoods (LIN) Grant awarded by the St. Paul Companies. The LIN Grant is awarded to individuals as an opportunity to pursue personal, artistic or professional leadership enrichment. I was the 1995 recipient of the William W. Griffin Award, given to an individual or group for their outstanding service and contribution in the performing arts, past recipients include August Wilson and Lou Bellamy. I received a 1994 New Music Theatre Award which funded a staged reading of my play Silver Tongues: Poison Lies, the 1993 Arts Over AIDS Performing Artist Grant in conjunction with Intermedia Arts and a 1992 Society's Baggage Award which funded a summer youth theatre project for urban teens.
I am an artist in residence for the Minnesota State Arts Board, VocalEssence, Minnesota Opera-Opera Ventures Young Audiences and COMPAS teaching classes and workshops in improvisation, creative dramatics, theatre, voice, and creative writing. For the Minnesota State Arts Board I have participated in residencies with rural communities around the five state region and developed diverse artist collaborations with artist in Wells, MN and artist throughout St. Paul and Minneapolis. I have been a regular artist in residence at St. Paul Central High School for almost two decades years. As a volunteer, I work closely with the Urban League, African American Family Services, Amicus, American Red Cross, Minnesota AIDS Project (former Board Member), Turning Point, and Minnesota Department of Corrections.
I am an accomplished actor and theatre professional; while here in the Twin Cities I have performed *(but not limited to) with Penumbra Theatre in Dinah Was, Jitney, Rollin on the T.O.B. A, Zooman and the Sign, Black Nativity, The Last Minstrel Show, Ma Rainy's Black Bottom , Let the Trumpets Sound and Spunk . Other selected stage credits include Always and Forever, Miss Evers Boys, Do Not Pass Go, Miss Dessa and Blues in the Night with the Illusion Theatre; Birth of the Boom, Fires in the Mirror and Dr. King' s Dream with the Mixed Blood Theatre Company; Show Boat and Bok Choy Variations with the Minnesota Opera Company; and Crowns, Christmas Carol, Black No More, Big White Fog and Many Colors Make the Thunder-King at the Guthrie Theatre. As an actor, I am also featured in the HBO mini-series "Laurel Avenue", the television pilot "Endeavor" and the NBC Movie of the Week "I Led Two Lives". My feature film credits include “Justice“, “Wooley Boys“, "Mighty Ducks", "Crossing the Bridge", "The Cure", "D.O.A." and "Lost Dog". I also appear regularly in national and local television commercials. As a vocalist, I have released two successful CD recordings, a Christmas album: “The Gift, A Christmas With Love“ and a jazz recording entitled: “Simply“ both available in area store or at cdbaby.com.
