2024-25 Academic Yr & Summer Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships

The African Studies Initiative (ASI) in collaboration with the Institute for Global Studies (IGS), offers Foreign Language & Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships to promote the study of African languages.

African languages taught at the University of Minnesota include: Arabic, Portuguese, Somali, and Swahili. All African languages taught at the University are FLAS-eligible languages. In addition to those languages, approval of which is automatic, it is possible to study other African languages through CourseShare during the academic year and during the summer at another US institution or abroad.

Funding Available

  • Summer: living stipend of $3,500 and up to $5,000 in tuition and fees
  • Academic Year, graduate students: living stipend of $20,000 and up to $18,000 towards tuition and required fees
