Chicano & Latino Studies Major

Spanish Minor

Alessia is a Peruvian, non-binary femme originally from Miami Florida, who has been living in Minnesota for almost four years.

Why Chicano and Latino Studies?

"I decided to pursue a CLS major because I love to be engaged in issues in the Latine community in the U.S and abroad! I’ve learned so much about my community and I’ve grown such a beautiful community around me in the Twin Cities through my major.  I also decided to major in CLS because of the community organizing opportunities and leadership!"

Alessia won the ¡Adelante! Scholarship for Newly Declared Majors

This scholarship is intended to support new majors who have declared in the current academic year and submitted a two-page, single-spaced essay on why they decided to become a Chicano and Latino studies major and what they hope this degree will help them achieve.

Rigoberto Gonzalez Jr
Psychology
Chicano & Latino Studies Major

Sociology of Law, Criminology, and Justice

Rigoberto Gonzalez Jr. was born in Cleveland, Ohio and raised in Minneapolis, with raíces in Guadalajara, Jalisco. He is a third year at the University of Minnesota and a first-generation Chicano in the process of triple majoring. As the proud son of hard-working immigrant parents that sacrificed their all to pursue a better life, Rigoberto embraces la cultura and raíces en su sangre y en su corazón.

Why Chicano and Latino Studies?

"Being a young brown Chicano going through the American educational system, there was never a professor or mentor that looked or sounded like me. The Chicano and Latino Studies department has opened doors for me such as: supportive staff and faculty, a great community, and exposure to student organizations like Mi Gente Latinx Student Cultural Center. With the Chicano and Latino Studies major, I see an opportunity where I can continue to work on my passions as a future educator and provide as much as I can to the next generation of leaders."

Rigoberto Gonzalez Jr  won the Best Chicano Studies Essay Award

Best Chicano Studies Essay Award applicants are students who have declared the Chicano and Latino studies major and submitted a high-quality essay produced while enrolled in a Chicano and Latino Studies course.
