Self Help Graphics at Fifty, Davalos' celebration of Latinx art
Book cover for Self Help Graphics at Fifty

UMN Chicano & Latino Studies' own, Professor Karen Mary Davalos, has released her book Self Help Graphics at Fifty, A Cornerstone of Latinx Art and Collaborative Artmaking on April 25th, 2023. She has co-edited this book with Tatiana Reinoza, their mission being to celebrate Self Help Graphics & Art's (SHG) approach towards collaborative art-making and to commemorate a 50 year history of Latinx art. SHG emerged in 1970s Los Angeles as a reaction to the Chicano Civil Rights movement, prioritizing becoming a beacon for socially engaging art and encouraging artistic development through community collaboration. Davalos' commitment to SHG has resulted in Self Help Graphics at Fifty, which cherishes the legacy of the institution through an insightful collection of essays, assembled through a collaborative team of scholars. Self Help Graphics at Fifty, A Cornerstone of Latinx Art and Collaborative Artmaking is available for purchase today through publisher, UC Press.
