GES Coffee Hour is Back - Friday, September 30th

ABSTRACT: In this talk Dr. Tia-Simone Gardner will discuss her interest in the death and life of Black landscapes. “Change is a Place” is the title of a video, photography, and oral history project about a Birmingham-adjacent steel town where she grew up in Fairfield, Alabama. Wrestling with the fragility of place, she will talk about how some of her own assumptions about the ontologies of Black Geographies were changed by conversations with her mother and other women and her family, both living and unliving. 

BIO: Tia-Simone Gardner is an interdisciplinary artist, educator, and Black feminist scholar. She is an Assistant Professor in Media and Cultural Studies at Macalester College.
