American Association of Geographers' Reaction to January 6, 2021

Recently the American Association of Geographers(AAG) released  a statement of Unequivocal Support for Democratic Process in the Wake of the January 6 Insurrection at the U.S. Capitol:

The AAG supports the legitimacy of the 2020 election and commends the state institutions which diligently certified the results. Every member of Congress has an obligation to do the same, and we unequivocally denounce those who aim to stand in the way of a peaceful transition of power. We condemn, in the strongest terms, the recent violence and insurrection in the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021. That this behavior was encouraged by President Trump, his allies in Congress, and public figures is both reprehensible and contrary to the values of democracy.

Especially troubling to us is the clear connection between these events and the emboldening of organized white supremacists and normalization by their apologists. Under these circumstances, calls for "healing" and "unity" are premature at best and cynical denial at worst. Unity can only be achieved through agreement on the facts and unflinching opposition to falsehoods. Such a rededication to the truth must include acceptance of the duly certified election results, transparency, and accountability. The AAG supports fair elections and peaceful transitions of power and calls on elected officials to ensure that this process is followed.
