Submerged Bur Oak
Bur oak trees that are submerged in the Red River, like this one near Fargo, can preserve a permanent record of flooding in their annual growth rings. Photograph by Scott St. George.

Using trees to study flooding? It’s called a paleohydrological assessment and it allows researchers to learn about ancient floods – way before any written records. That was the subject of an interview that aired on MPR's Main Street show.  GES faculty member, Scott St. George is PI for a new grant which will allow researchers to study the history of flooding along the Red River by examining burr oaks, which can live 400 years. He is part of the interview which begins around the 26:39 point of the show's recording
