Dave Van Riper and Gus Wezerek have an editorial in the New York Times discussing the impacts that the Census Bureau’s new privacy algorithm has on population counts for small communities and sub-populations. They reveal that noise injection into counts to protect the privacy of respondents leads to inaccurate data. In turn these communities will have difficulty planning effectively for their futures with poor quality data.
