Graduate Language Certification
Certification is based on either prior coursework or testing and must have occurred within the last five years.
To receive certification in Spanish or Portuguese, please fill out this google form (z.umn.edu/spanport_lang). We will automatically be notified of your request and will fill, sign and submit to GSSP form OTR 192 and copy you on the submission email. No further action should be required from you - we will reach out if we have questions.
Please do not fill out the form until you have a grade or results posted from your course or exam.
If you need certification for the Fulbright Program, please do not fill out this form, instead contact orive001@umn.edu or spanport@umn.edu.

Proficiency may be demonstrated by:
- Completion of two years of the language at another university or college with a C average, or one year of a language at the college level with an average of B or better and a grade no lower than B in the final term.
- Completion of the first year of the language (SPAN/PORT 1001-1002/4001-4002 or 1022/4022 or Reading Spanish/Portuguese graduate course via courseshare) at the UMN with a grade of C or better.
- Graduate reading exam from another institution
- Graduate reading exam from UMN (reading LPE)
If you would like to demonstrate proficiency in a different way, please email spptgrad@umn.edu.
If coursework was completed at UMN or if you took the reading LPE, we will look up your grade and score to complete the form. If it was done at another institution, please submit a PDF your transcript or results with the google form.
