About

The Center for Premodern Studies continues the University of Minnesota’s strong tradition of multidisciplinary scholarship in the historical humanities and social sciences.

About the Center for Premodern Studies

The Center for Premodern Studies connects past and present through rigorous historical research. Our multidisciplinary community explores how ancient and medieval worlds inform today's critical issues. We advance premodern scholarship through workshops, lectures, courses, and fellowships. Our programs serve researchers, graduate students, and undergraduates at every career stage.

Our members span University of Minnesota departments and Twin Cities cultural institutions. Most events welcome students, faculty, and the public. We collaborate with partners including the Minneapolis Institute of Art and the Newberry Library. Join our community of scholars, curators, artists, and artisans dedicated to understanding how the past shapes our world.

History of the Center

Founded in 2021, CPS builds on the University of Minnesota’s strong history of multidisciplinary engagement in the historical humanities and social sciences led by the Center for Early Modern History, the Center for Medieval Studies, the Mellon-funded Consortium for the Study of the Premodern World, and others. Learn about each of these entities and the important roles that they have played in the creation of the CPS under the history sections below.
