Joshua Strayhorn is a historian of 19th and 20th-century African American history. He is currently working on his first book project, Freedom’s Promise: Black Mobility and Migration in North Carolina, 1860 -1898 under contract with the University of North Carolina Press. His work considers how North Carolinian freedpeople made their freedom a reality. Shaped by geography, pockets of political power, and religious orientation, North Carolinian freedpeople used migration movements, and even armed resistance to carve out a space for themselves. In addition to his academic work, Dr. Strayhorn is also a committed public historian with experience working with national units such as the National Park Service as well as local community historical societies.  Dr. Strayhorn earned his Master’s degree and Ph.D. in history from Duke University and a bachelor’s in history from North Carolina Central University.
