Amy is a specialist in contemporary and twentieth century American art and its global connections. Her teaching and research interests are wide-ranging and include the intersections of the visual arts, landscape, the environmental humanities and environmental justice, social justice, infrastructure and urbanism, car culture, and film study. Her dissertation project is 'Highway Hypnosis: The Freeway as Landscape, 1956-1999.'
