My dissertation centers the experiences of queer, trans*, non-binary, and gender expansive Chicanx/Latinx communities who have historically been targeted and criminalized for using and engaging with cannabis. I bring together queer Chicanx/Latinx, Black, and Indigenous feminist theoretical and methodological frameworks to honor lived experiences and imagine cannabis beyond mainstream stereotypical representations of a profit-driven cannabis industry. This research unearths how LGBTQ+, gender non- conforming Chicanx and Latinx communities across Los Angeles have created and sustained significant cannabis relationships and spaces within and beyond the limits of government legality. It traces a contemporary cannabis narrative in L.A. to understand how the state came to create a capitalist cannabis industry and how marginalized communities have resisted state oppression and persecution.
