Sarah received her MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Texas at Austin, where she was a James A. Michener Fellow. Prior to joining the Department of Writing Studies, Sarah was a Core Faculty member at Amsterdam University College, where she taught creative writing, screenwriting and academic writing. Additionally, she has taught at the Emerson College European Center, Istanbul's Bilgi University, Loyola University Chicago, the University of Texas at Austin, the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth and the Loft Literary Center.
As a journalist, Sarah's reportage and essays have appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, BBC Travel, CNBC, Toronto Star, Chicago Tribune, and Minnesota Monthly as well as many literary journals. While an Amsterdam-based correspondent for the BBC, Sarah co-authored several European and North American guides for Lonely Planet and crisscrossed Europe by train as a contributing writer for Eurail. Her writing has won awards and residencies from the Austin Film Festival, the Chesterfield Film Project, Associated Writing Programs, the Bucknell Seminar for Younger Poets and La Muse.
In 2025, Sarah will be teaching Travel Writing: the South of France at the University of Minnesota's campus in Montpellier, France.
