Sara Quinn is a senior fellow at the Hubbard School, where she has taught undergraduate courses in media design and magazine storytelling since 2019.
A former president of the Society for News Design, Quinn spent many years as a faculty member at The Poynter Institute for Media Studies. Her work has included research for the National Press Photographers Association and a fellowship with the Reynolds Journalism Institute, along with board service for organizations including the Associated Collegiate Press, National Scholastic Press Association and the American Institute of Graphic Arts.
Trained as a journalist, graphic designer and illustrator, Quinn has led hands-on workshops in design, visual thinking and creativity in more than a dozen countries. She also developed a five-week course in informational graphics for staffers at the United Nations.
Over the years, Quinn has edited and designed just about every kind of visual journalism imaginable—and continues to make room for passion projects. One of her favorites is Wander Magazine, an ongoing collaboration with two other art directors that has showcased the work of 67 women from 13 countries, offering personal and often striking expressions of how they see the world at a particular moment.
Before moving into the classroom, Quinn spent nearly two decades leading visual journalism in newspaper newsrooms, including 11 years at her hometown paper, The Wichita Eagle in Kansas.
Quinn holds a BA from Wichita State University and a master’s degree in illustration from Syracuse University.
