Admissions Requirements and Guidelines
Faculty review applications using holistic methods that consider all parts of the applicant’s portfolio.
Requirements for Admission
- A major in American Indian and Indigenous studies or a related field at the bachelor’s level or higher. Related fields include, but are not limited to anthropology; history; English; geography; political science; American studies; ethnic studies; gender, women and sexuality studies; environmental studies; sociology; public health; public policy; education; law; art practice; art history.
- Students entering the PhD program must hold at least a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in the U.S. or a comparable degree from outside the U.S.
- International applicants have additional requirements related to English language proficiency.
Admissions Guidelines
- A preferred undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher, and (if applicable) strong graduate GPA.
- Preparation for graduate-level research, as evidenced by prior coursework and a writing sample that demonstrates research skills and ability to formulate a strong argument.
- Clear delineation of research interests that contribute to the intellectual project of American Indian and Indigenous Studies.
- Evidence of connections to and/or work with Indigenous nations/communities.
- A convincing intellectual rationale for the anticipated research project and for the faculty you are applying to work with.
