Since its founding in 2000, the Department of  Asian and Middle Eastern Studies (AMES) has grown to include an award-winning group of language teachers and professors who have authored definitive language textbooks as well as cutting-edge studies, discussing everything from ancient Chinese poetry to South Asian feminism to Japanese animation. Our innovative Chinese Flagship Program has led many of our students to successful careers in business, taking their place among the next generation of global professionals.

AMES faculty and staff are committed not only to the study of Asian and Middle Eastern culture, literature, and society—they’re dedicated to equipping students with the skills and understanding necessary to contribute as citizens in a complex, global society.
