VV Chari honored by IIT Bombay
Professor V.V. Chari, founding director of the Heller-Hurwicz Economics Institute and the Paul Frenzel Land Grant Professor of Liberal Arts, was honored in March by his alma mater, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay). Each March the university celebrates its Foundation Day to mark the date the institution's foundation stone was laid by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, then Prime Minister of India, on March 10, 1959. Professor Chari was bestowed with the Distinguished Alumnus Award for his professional accomplishments in his field and contributing to the reputation of IIT Bombay.
Although he was not able to travel to Mumbai to accept the Distinguished Alumnus Award in person, Professor Chari spoke with the audience via video. "I am humbled and honored to receive this award," he began before also giving recognition to his parents, siblings, wife, and children. Chari reflected on arriving at the campus as one of 600 incoming students. "The faculty at IIT Bombay taught me a lot, but I learned much more from my fellow students."
He closes with some advice for current students. "Your parents, your families, and the nation of India have invested a great deal in the trust that you will be the future leaders of the nation and the world. Uphold that trust! Give back to your communities, give back to the nation, give back to the world. And I am confident that you will be the greatest generation this planet has ever seen."
