We focus on areas where there is potential to break new ground in teaching and research, discover frontier tools of economic theory, and apply them to global challenges.
What sets us apart
The Heller-Hurwicz Economics Institute supports rigorous, transformative economic research away from the pressures of Washington and Wall Street. We focus on areas where there is potential to break new ground in teaching and research, discover frontier tools of economic theory, and apply them to policies and institutions that will address global challenges today and in the future. In addition to supporting research on a wide variety of topics, we concentrate on three areas that stem from existing departmental strengths—climate change, financial regulation, and social insurance.
The University of Minnesota’s Department of Economics has consistently been ranked among the top ten in the world. The Heller-Hurwicz Economics Institute builds on this legacy and advances economic research and discourse in partnership with schools and centers across the University of Minnesota.
