The Language Collaboratory
The Language Collaboratory is a partnership for the advancement of intercollegiate dialogue on the teaching of languages and cultures, driven by language centers and institutes at the University of Iowa, the University of Michigan, the University of Minnesota, Michigan State University, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Through this initiative, language educators across the Big Ten institutions have benefited from opportunities for networking opportunities with peers, as well as learning about timely topics that touch on instructional challenges and innovative teaching approaches. Session recordings can be viewed on the Language Collaboratory YouTube channel.
The Language Collaboratory sprearheaded the inaugural Big Ten Academic Alliance Language Education Summit in October 2024. This initiative includes representatives from all BTAA universities and K-12 leaders in the home states of participating universities.
With funding from the BTAA Liberal Arts and Sciences Deans Grants Initiative, the Summit addressed two core questions:
- How can language centers and institutes at Big Ten universities, in partnership with state-level K-12 world language leadership, advance language education and research?
- What are new forms of collaboration to strengthen language education that Big Ten universities and K-12 educators might engage in?
New collaboration opportunities derived from the summit are forthcoming.
