The minor in religious studies is available to master’s (MA and MS) and doctoral students in relevant fields such as history, classics, English, anthropology, philosophy, American studies, and so forth, and is under the general direction of members of the graduate faculty who represent a broad spectrum of disciplines.

Prerequisites for Admission

Admission is contingent on prior admission to a master’s or doctoral degree-granting program with the Graduate School.

Special Application Requirements

Students should consult with the director of graduate studies (DGS) in religious studies as early as possible, but, in any case, no later than their third semester of study. The DGS in religious studies must approve the applicant’s proposed course of study and sign the student’s degree program form.

Minor Only Requirements

  • 9 credits at the 5000 or 8000 level for an MA or
  • 12 credits at the 5000 or 8000 level for the PhD
  • RELS 5001 Theory and Method in the Study of Religion (3 credits)
  • Remaining credits in RELS offerings or other appropriate courses, selected in consultation with the DGS in Religious Studies. See Courses.
  • At least one religious studies graduate faculty member must serve on the student’s examination committee.

Use of 4xxx Courses

Inclusion of 4xxx courses on degree program forms is subject to approval by the DGS.

Language Requirements

There is no language requirement beyond that of the student’s graduate major.
