This session addresses student interest in conversations about the limits and opportunities of casting across race, gender, and sexuality. Local Actor / Activist / Playwright / Director / Teacher Shá Cage (Catalyst Arts) brings a range of experiences to this conversation. Her work has centered Black Women’s experiences while she has also played roles such as Hal in an all female Henry IV Part 1 that upended casting conventions. As an actor / director she has worked at the Guthrie Theater, Children’s Theatre, Intermedia Arts, Ten Thousand Things, Jungle Theater, and with the BFA Guthrie Actor Training Program this past fall. In collaboration with her partner E.G. Bailey, she runs Catalyst Arts, dedicated to centering marginalized voices. She also co-founded Tru Ruts, Mama Mosaic, and the Minnesota Spoken Word Association. She has worked within mainstream theater interrogating boundaries around race and gender while also creating new community-driven opportunities and alliances.

Shá will share her “fumbles, intentions, and discoveries” in conversation with students. The session will include presentation, discussion, and breakout groups.

This event is presented by the UMTAD Arts Engagement HUB.
