2023-24 BA main stage season will feature two contemporary adaptations of classic novels that center on questions about bodily autonomy. These two productions, Pride & Prejudice and Fucking A, will be in conversation with the BA Studio Series production of Roe, which offers insight into the complex women behind the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision. These three productions invite our students and audiences to consider how the issue of bodily autonomy manifests across time and space, impacting people of many racial, gender, and class identities.

This isn’t your grandmother’s Austen! This is Jane Austen with dance breaks! Bold, surprising, boisterous, and timely, this P&P for a new era explores the absurdities and thrills of finding your perfect (or imperfect) match in life. University of Minnesota BA Theatre Arts Program students bring the beloved tale of Elizabeth Bennet to the stage, telling the story of the constraints of marriage and the effects it may have on women’s autonomy.

Hamill’s take on Pride and Prejudice draws attention to gender as a performative subject with cross-dress casting and the take on various roles by the same actors. Set in the regency era, Pride and Prejudice tells the story of a young woman searching for true love without losing who she is as an individual but make no mistake, this is not your grandmother’s dusty copy of Jane Austen’s classic.

Filled with modern humor and dance breaks, this reimagination encapsulates societal issues that we still face today. With creative scenery, sound, lighting and costume designed by MFA students, the University of Minnesota’s Pride and Prejudice is guaranteed to make the audience laugh, cry, and swoon.
