Vanessa is a Nigerian-American Counseling Psychology doctoral candidate born and raised in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. She is currently completing her pre-doctoral internship at Harvard Medical School/Brigham and Women's Hospital. She earned her BA in Psychology from Columbia University and spent two years working as a Clinical Research Coordinator at the University of Pennsylvania before coming to the University of Minnesota. She is broadly interested in 1) Black mental health with a focus on Black women and other Black people with intersecting marginalized identities and 2) the mental health impacts of the Minneapolis Unrest. She is currently working on her dissertation which is a mixed methods examination of the Strong Black Woman schema and its relationship to positive and negative mental health outcomes for Black women from different ethnic groups.
