Interests: Labor History, Railroads, Geography, Material Culture

Research Goals: I'm interested in the durability of Japanese capitalism, and the investment of ordinary people in what we call "consumer society". How people come to see themselves as workers, consumers, and citizens is to my mind a question, not just of ideology, but of the physical spaces in which we make decisions. To that end, I want to investigate how railroads, and the shifting layout of Japanese cities, mutually entailed what it meant to live and reason as a member of a modern industrial nation.
