Jeremy Meckler is a PhD candidate in Comparative Studies in Discourse and Society, with a graduate minor in Moving Image, Media, and Sound Studies. His scholarship investigates connections, collaborations, and communications between experimental and avant-garde film and video and mainstream cinema and television. His dissertation research looks primarily at the burgeoning field of film study in the American academy of the 1970s, seeking to identify a unifying ethic behind the spread of experimental, non-vocational film education during this period; to answer whether that ethic can be connected to the New Hollywood moment; and to identify the role of these film schools in producing the audience for the youth-focused, rebellious, and intellectually challenging movies being distributed concurrently by major Hollywood studios.
