Amy Joyer completed her PhD at the University of Minnesota, with a major in communication studies (interpersonal focus) and a doctoral minor in developmental psychology. She also completed her MA in communication studies here at the University of Minnesota and has a BA in Communications and Psychology from Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD.
Her area of research interest centers around the language of contrition and peer relationships among preschool-aged children. She enjoys working with children at the Child Development Laboratory School to better understand the verbal and nonverbal components of remorse and apology and their impact on relationship repair.
In the classroom, Amy is energized by leading students through the learning process. She believes that education should be interactive and that some of the best ways to understand something better include critical questioning and direct examples connected to everyday experience.
In the department, Amy is the Course Coordinator for Comm 1101: Introduction to Public Speaking and serves on several rotating committees, including the Undergraduate Committee, the HR Committee, the DEI Committee, and GOVCON.
Before returning to academics, she worked as a Director of Education and Center Director for Sylvan Learning Centers throughout the Midwest. Working with children and young adults of all ages and backgrounds cemented her passion for teaching and desire to help each individual find a way to connect with what they are learning.
