Chemistry Placement Test

The chemistry placement test is required to register for chemistry classes. Placement tests help you and your advisor determine if you are ready for the next class in a sequence, as not all courses are taught the same across institutions. Chemistry is not a required class for most students, but it is one of many options available to fulfill the physical science with lab requirement. Transfer students who have completed a chemistry class at a previous institution will be placed into appropriate U of M chemistry courses based on that preparation. Consult with your advisor at orientation.

All physical and biological science majors build on college-level chemistry. These majors and programs require chemistry:

  • Biology, Society, & Environment
  • Chemistry
  • Earth Sciences
  • Physics
  • Physiology
  • Pre-health science programs

Allow 90 minutes for the chemistry placement test. It does not need to be completed in one sitting. You are allowed to start the test and return to it later. The system will save your place and you can continue where you left off. Calculators are allowed, but no other resources.
