Jones Hall Now Features Two Zoom Rooms

The Language Center now has two Zoom Rooms, Jones 127A and Jones 135B!

What’s a Zoom Room?

A Zoom Room is a conferencing space powered by hardware, software, and a Zoom Rooms software license that enables users to join Zoom meetings without connecting a computer.

Jones 127A and 135B are both equipped with a large screen monitor, a tablet to join and control Zoom meetings, and a Polycom Studio video conferencing camera with speaker tracking. Users can share content from their laptop wirelessly by logging in to the Zoom application.

What’s it good for?

  • Live Teaching: Instructors can teach remotely from the space. With active speaker tracking, the instructor can move about the room, using the whiteboard or handling props, without worrying about being off-camera. It is also easy to share from a document camera (included in 127A and available by request in 135B).
  • Materials Development: Instructors can record lectures or demonstrations in Zoom, and upload those recordings to Canvas. As one example, the document camera or whiteboard can capture writing while the instructor narrates.
  • Learning: Individual students or small groups of students can attend a remote class without needing to bring a laptop or headset. Students learning together can use the speaker-tracking camera to ensure they are always on camera when speaking.
  • Meetings: Can be an engaging way to include a mix of local and remote participants in meetings, ensuring everyone can be seen and heard.
