Exploring Online Teaching: Three Opportunities for Instructors

There are three opportunities next semester for language instructors to work with experienced technologists and in a supportive cohort to move their courses online. Please note that space in all of these opportunities are limited and that application deadlines are firm.

CARLA: Ttansitioning to Teaching Online (TTLO)

This unique semester-long professional development program is for experienced classroom language teachers who want to transition to teaching their language class online. Offered completely online, TTLO will give teachers the first-hand experience of being an online learner while focusing on the important elements of a successful online language class such as creating community, time management strategies for teachers and students, choosing appropriate technology tools for communicative-based activities, and developing a variety of online activity types. In addition to delving into these concepts of online teaching, participants will see them in action by taking part in model online language activities as language learners. By the end of the program, participants will have a portfolio of activities ready to be incorporated into an online language course.

The Big Ten LCTL Partnership, housed in the Center for Language Teaching Advancement (CeLTA) at Michigan State University (MSU, has focused on developing online models of LCTL instruction, promoting proficiency-oriented teaching practices, and collaborating across the Big Ten Academic Alliance. As part of this continued effort, they are accepting applications for the Spring 2020 Introduction to Online Language Teaching course, open free of charge to all LCTL instructors within the Big Ten Academic Alliance! 

CEI: Designing & Delivering Online Learning for Graduate Students & Postdocs

January 27 – March 6, 2020

The Spring 2020 Certificate Program is open to University of Minnesota Graduate Students and Postdoctoral participants. Making use of the Canvas course site, participants will review select resources, participate in online activities, and discuss ideas with peers through discussion forums. Each week will consist of readings, online discussions and a Zoom meeting. A short capstone project communicating your understanding of online learning in your discipline will be due on March 6, 2020. Participants should expect to spend approximately four hours per week completing readings, interactive activities, and zoom sessions during the seminar.
