FLAS Fellowships for 2021-2022: Student Funding for Languages!

Foreign Language & Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships in African, Asian, and International studies are now being accepted for summer 2021 and academic year 2021-2022! Applications are due Tuesday, February 2, 2021.

The competition is open to undergraduate, graduate, and professional degree students to study a modern less-commonly-taught language (LCTL) in combination with area studies courses. Fellowships are available for the following modern foreign languages:

African Studies: Arabic, Somali, Swahili, Portuguese
Asian Studies: Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, Hindi, Hmong, Japanese, Korean, Urdu
International Studies: Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, Finnish, Hebrew, Hindi, Hmong, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Portuguese, Russian, Somali, Swahili, Swedish, Urdu

In addition to the languages listed above, a variety of modern languages received through CourseShare are available for funding with approval. Please email the Language Center at elsie@umn.edu to discuss options before submitting an application for a language not offered locally.
