Teaching Remotely: Beyond Zoom

Zoom is a great tool for synchronous online language teaching, and it can be implemented quickly as an alternative to a traditional face-to-face class.

Some other tools you can consider to quickly develop online asynchronous lessons include:

  • Proctorio: a flexible e-proctoring tool that gives faculty the opportunity to set up online proctoring specific to their own assessment needs. It is a fully automated and scalable remote proctoring system that leverages machine learning and tracking facial movement to monitor students during online exams.
  • VoiceThread: allows instructors and/or students to create, share, and comment on images, Microsoft PowerPoint presentations, videos, audio files, documents, and PDFs, using a microphone, webcam, text, phone, and audio-file upload.
  • FlipGrid: enables instructors and students to record, upload, view, react and respond to each other’s short videos.
  • Screencast-O-Matic: records screen activity and/or your webcam. You can record a PowerPoint or Google Slides presentation (voice over the slides), or demonstrate a tool directly from your computer.
  • LC Elevator: if you plan on showing films in class, see if your film is already digitized, and if not, submit digitization requests as soon as possible.
