The University Wind Ensemble and University Symphony Orchestra close the semester in partnership presenting repertoire for smaller ensembles, including: Johann Schmelzer's Sonata duodecima à 7, Gordon Jacob's Old Wine in New Bottles, Stephen Lias’s Mount Rainier Search and Rescue, and W. A. Mozart’s crowning orchestral opus, Symphony No. 41 (Jupiter).

Emily Threinen is the director of bands and associate professor at the University of Minnesota. She conducts the Wind Ensemble, guides the graduate wind band conducting program, and provides administrative leadership for the bands. Threinen consistently works with composers, arrangers, and performing artists of varied disciplines. She is active across the nation and abroad (recently in Brazil, Spain, Australia, and Canada) as a guest conductor, clinician, and conference presenter. An advocate for music education, Threinen is a Yamaha Master Educator and is active in ABA, WASBE, CBDNA, NBA, and NAfME.

Rose Craig Tyler is a wind band conducting doctoral candidate. Rose holds a master’s degree in wind band conducting from the University of Minnesota and dual bachelor degrees from the University of Illinois in instrumental music education and piano pedagogy. From 2017-2022, Rose served as band director at Matthews Middle School in Wauconda, Illinois. Rose currently serves as conductor of the UMN Maroon Campus Band. Outside the university, Rose is a professional collaborative pianist and serves as associate conductor of Lady Band Chamber Winds.

Nahal Javan is a masters candidate at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, pursuing a degree in conducting with a wind band emphasis. Prior to her graduate studies, Javan served as the band director at Northfield High School, in Northfield, Minnesota from 2021-2025, leading their Symphonic Band, Concert Band, and the Jazz I ensembles. During her time at Northfield HS, the Concert Band performed at the 2024 Minnesota Music Educator’s Association Mid-Winter Clinic, featuring mostly new works for wind band including the premiere of Eleanor Harpstead’s piece Desperate Measures. Javan received her bachelor’s degree in instrumental music education from St. Olaf College in 2020. 

Mark Russell Smith has served as the Artistic Director of Orchestral Studies at the University of Minnesota since 2007. A graduate in cello performance from the Juilliard School, and of the Curtis Institute of Music, he studied conducting with Max Rudolf and Otto-Werner Mueller. In 2012, Smith spearheaded the U of M School of Music’s Britten Peace Project, with performances of Britten’s War Requiem in Europe and the U.S. Recent U of M projects include Bright Sheng's Dream of the Red Chamber, Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring (with the Joffrey Ballet), and St. Matthew Passion with the Detmold Hochschule für Musik (Germany). He serves as music director and conductor of the Quad City Symphony Orchestra, where he led the Midwest premiere of the Pulitzer Prize-winning opera Omar's Journey by Michael Abels. Smith has guest conducted the Minnesota Orchestra, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and the Symphony Orchestras of Houston, St. Louis, Nashville, and many others. He was named artistic director of the Greater Twin Cities Youth Symphonies in 2012, and was director of new music projects with the SPCO. Previously, he has served as music director of the Cheyenne Symphony, Springfield (MA) Symphony, and Richmond Symphony.
