Congratulations to Yilin Bao, Piano, Winner of the 2022-2023 University Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition

Yilin Bao will perform Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in C Minor with the University Symphony Orchestra in Ted Mann Concert Hall on Wednesday, March 1, 2023. 

Honorable mentions were also awarded to Sijie Yang (trumpet) and Evan Fraser (flute) for their outstanding performances.

Artist Bios

Winner 

Yilin Bao, pianist, is the winner of the 2022-23 University of Minnesota Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition. She will perform Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor with the University Symphony Orchestra in Ted Mann Concert Hall on Wednesday, March 1, 2023.

Born in Suzhou, China, Ms. Bao first came to international prominence in 2014 as a 17-year-old, winning first prize at the 24th Young Musician International Competition 'Città di Barletta' in Italy. Yilin has appeared as a soloist at summer festivals, including the Adamant Summer Music School in Vermont (2014); Shanghai Conservatory of Music International Piano Festival (2012, 2013, 2014); and the Euro Music Festival & Academy in Germany (2019). During this time, she worked with piano masters such as Oxana Yablonskaya and Yoheved Kaplinsky, Konrad Maria Engel, and Golda Vainberg-Tatz. Yilin Bao holds Bachelor's and Master’s degrees from the Manhattan School of Music where she studied with André-Michel Schub. Yilin is currently pursuing her DMA degree at the University of Minnesota School of Music under the tutelage of Dr. Paul Shaw.

Sijie Yang, trumpet



Sijie Yang is a third-year DMA student in trumpet performance. He studies with Professor Marissa Benedict. He received his Masters degree from The Boston Conservatory and his Bachelors degree from the China People's Liberation Army Academy of Art.



 





 

 

Evan Fraser, flute



Evan Fraser is a flutist based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, currently working toward his Master of Music in Flute Performance and his Master of Arts in Music Theory at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities. Evan is an active performer with A New World: Intimate Music from Final Fantasy and the Wayzata Symphony Orchestra. He has also performed with the University of Minnesota Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, and Chamber Winds and is an active freelance performer and teacher. Evan currently studies contemporary and Baroque flute with Immanuel Davis and has also studied extensively with George Pope, Lindsey Goodman, Goran Marcusson, and Stephen Preston.
