Colonel Jason K. Fettig From the U.S. Marine Band Visits the School of Music

Col. Fettig

On Monday, October 22, Colonel Jason K. Fettig, director of "The President's Own" United States Marine Band, joined Dr. Emily Threinen and the U of M Wind Ensemble for rehearsal in Ted Mann Concert Hall. The visit took place on an “off day” for Col. Fettig as he travels with the U.S. Marine Band on their 2018 U.S. National Tour.

Col. Fettig worked with the ensemble on O Magnum Mysterium by Morten Lauridsen and Symphony in Bb by Paul Hindemith.

Students had the following comments about this experience:

"Working with Col. Fettig was a wonderful opportunity and one I won't forget. I particularly enjoyed the expression he showed with his hands. The Lauridsen and Hindemith are very different pieces and I appreciated his comments on both pieces especially when it came to phrasing, line, and direction."  –Sarah Weisbrod, flute

"I loved having another conductor's opinions and interpretations of the music. He told us about how the music all fits together, how each counterpoint line (in Hindemith) works alone and with others and how we as musicians have to fit together in order for the music to flow and sound as it was intended." –Annika Ross, horn

"It was a really great opportunity to see how such a distinguished conductor runs a rehearsal. I found his interpretations of the music to be really cool, and his knowledge about composers, history and perspective really helped me have a better understanding of the character of the piece. This was a great opportunity and I am thankful that Dr. Threinen was able to make it happen!"
