Mark Russell Smith (orchestral conducting) returned to Philadelphia in January 2019 to conduct the Curtis Orchestra at Immaculata College and in Verizon Hall at Philadelphia’s Kimmel Center. The program included the Philadelphia premiere of Jennifer Higdon’s Tuba Concerto, with Pittsburgh Symphony Principal Tubist Craig Knox, as well as Copland’s Appalachian Spring and Dvorak’s Seventh Symphony. During his 10-day Curtis residency, he conducted rehearsals and performances and mentored orchestral and conducting students.
