Understanding the Community

Headshot of Amirah Razman

Amirah Razman wants to give people the scoop. Hailing from Eden Prairie, MN, Razman is a first-year student pursuing journalism at the University of Minnesota. As a College of Liberal Arts student, she believes that a liberal arts education “is all about just branching out and learning about all sorts of different things that you may be passionate about.”

As a child, Razman was an avid watcher of WCCO, and seeing the world through a screen in her living room sparked a passion that Razman plans on pursuing as a career. “I was really intrigued by everything going on in the world,” says Razman. “So I started watching the news more.” In high school, she was involved in a broadcasting group and the yearbook team, activities where her “passions were really solidified.” Even as she began her time at the University during the COVID-19 pandemic, she never lost her love and enthusiasm for reporting, noting how “people are becoming more self-aware” during these turbulent times because of dedicated journalists.

Razman emphasizes that she values education and wanted to attend a school that does the same. “I came here just to be a part of a program here in Minnesota to obtain a good education.” Especially as an aspiring journalist, Razman appreciates that “[Students at the University] are in a really good market for [journalism].”

Razman became a content creator for authentic journalism experience without compromising her academic success. “[The CLA Office of Institutional Advancement] emphasize[s] that you gotta put yourself as a student first, before anything else.” Through this position, she hopes to improve her writing, communication, and interviewing skills. Additionally, Razman notes that as a first-year student in a pandemic, “there’s not really a huge opportunity to interact with people face to face, so I think my primary goal is to talk to people, whether it’s professors or other students...through being a content creator, and just trying to get to know the community.”
